A charger's wattage is a ceiling it will negotiate up to, not a speed it delivers. Plug a phone that accepts 25 watts into a 65 watt charger and you get 25 watts. That single misunderstanding is behind most of the disappointment in this category, including two of the complaints below.

The six compared here run from 25 to 65 watts. What follows the table is the arithmetic that decides whether more watts will do anything for you, why a multi-port charger is not that many watts per port, and the three listings whose stated output voltage is the wall socket rather than anything a USB port has ever produced.

Watts are a ceiling you negotiate, not a speed you receive

USB-C Power Delivery is a negotiation. The phone and the charger agree on a voltage and a current, and the phone decides how much it is willing to take. A charger cannot push more into a device than that device accepts.

So if your phone tops out at 25 watts, a 65 watt charger charges it at exactly the same speed as a 25 watt one. The extra capacity does nothing until you plug in something that can use it, like a tablet or a laptop.

Two complaints on this page are precisely this. One reviewer found real-world output below the advertised wattage; another said a new charger was no faster than the one it replaced. In both cases the charger was almost certainly doing its job and the phone was the limit. Buy watts for the biggest thing you intend to charge, not for the phone.

The rated wattage is shared across the ports, not per port

This is the second most misread number here. A 45 watt dual-port charger does not deliver 45 watts to each port. It has 45 watts to divide, and plugging a second device in takes power away from the first.

The 50 watt model on this page is refreshingly honest about it, with reviewers describing how it automatically splits power between its two ports so a phone and a tablet can share. That is how all of them work; most simply do not mention it.

The practical version: if you want two devices at full speed, you need a charger rated for the sum of both, or two chargers. That is an argument for the two-pack on this page over a single multi-port block, depending on whether you need the power in one room or two.

Three of these say their output is 120 volts, which is the wall

Read the output voltage field on these listings and three of them state 120 volts. That is the mains supply going in, not what comes out of a USB port. USB-C Power Delivery works at 5, 9, 12, 15 and 20 volts, and nothing else.

Take the figures at face value and the arithmetic gets silly. One lists 120 volts at 15 amps, which is 1,800 watts, from a charger sold as 45. Another gives 600 watts, a third 360. All three are sold as between 45 and 65.

Two listings here fill the field in correctly, at 9 and 12 volts. The lesson is not that the chargers are dangerous, it is that the spec table is typed in by the seller and large parts of it are unchecked. Trust the wattage and the port count; ignore the voltage and current fields entirely.

One is sold as 84 watts and lists 45 in its own specification

The retractable 4-in-1 carries 84W in its product name and in its Amazon title, and its own wattage field says 45 watts. Both numbers are on the same page.

There is a charitable reading, which is that 84 is a theoretical sum across four ports and 45 is what any one of them can actually deliver. If so, that is the same shared-power point as above, dressed up as a bigger headline number.

Either way, the number to plan around is the one in the specification, not the one in the name. It is the lowest-rated product on this page at 4.2, which does not prove the two facts are connected, but does not argue against it either.

Two of these have 22,000 reviews between them. The rest have almost none.

The evidence here is wildly uneven and the star ratings hide it. The 25 watt model has 15,604 ratings and the 65 watt has 6,408. The other four have 103, 85, 60 and 42.

A 4.6 from 15,604 and a 4.6 from 42 are not the same claim. The first is a measurement; the second is a handful of early buyers and could move a long way in either direction.

This does not make the small-sample products bad, and two of them are the most interesting designs on the page. It means that when you weigh a thin score against a thick one, thin should lose ties. The rating column shows both numbers for exactly this reason.

Warm is efficiency loss, and flat makes it warmer

No charger is perfectly efficient. Converting mains AC down to low voltage DC wastes somewhere around 8 to 15 percent as heat, so a 50 watt charger working hard is shedding several watts into its own casing.

That is why the slim flat model on this page draws comments about running warm. Its selling point is a body thin enough to sit flush behind furniture, and less surface area and less air is exactly what makes a charger warmer. The two properties are the same property.

Warm is normal and expected. Too hot to hold comfortably, or hot while charging nothing, is not, and is worth a return while the window is open.

Amazon filed a cable in with the chargers

A seventh product sits in the same Wall Chargers category and is not a wall charger. It is a beaded 4-in-1 charging cable, sold largely as a gift for teenagers, with no plug, no wattage and no ports. Its specification fields are cable fields: data transfer rate, connector gender, number of pins.

It is left out of the comparison above because putting a cable in a table of chargers would make the table worse. Its recurring complaint, for what it is worth, is connector tips breaking off after a few months.

The wider point is that Amazon's category is not a reliable filter. Browsing a category and assuming everything in it is the same kind of product will occasionally hand you something that cannot do the job at all.

Will a 65W charger charge my phone faster than a 25W one?

Only if your phone accepts more than 25 watts. Power Delivery is a negotiation and the device sets the limit, so above your phone's ceiling the extra watts do nothing. Buy for the largest thing you plan to charge, which for most people is a tablet or laptop rather than the phone.

Is a 45W dual-port charger 45W per port?

No. That is the total to be divided, and using the second port takes power from the first. For two devices at full speed you want a charger rated for the sum, or two separate chargers.

Why does my wall charger get warm?

Because converting mains voltage down wastes roughly 8 to 15 percent as heat. A slim flat charger runs warmer than a chunky one for the same output, since there is less surface area to shed it. Warm is fine; too hot to hold, or hot with nothing plugged in, is not.

Do I need PPS for a Samsung phone?
